A family home’s bedroom being cleared respectfully after a bereavement in Offaly

There is no good time to clear a house after a death. There is often a deadline — a sale, a tenancy ending, a council or landlord wanting the keys, probate that can’t move until the house is empty — and there is almost always more in the house than anyone expected. Families divide between the ones who want it done and the ones who can’t face it, and the one who lives nearest ends up with the job.

We’ve done a great many of these. The crew is briefed to be quiet and careful; nobody comments on anything; paperwork, photographs, jewellery and anything that looks personal is set aside without being asked; and we work on the days and at the pace the family can manage. ManageWaste.ie is operated by Krystal Klean Express Limited, permit NWCPO-25-13287-01, and we can deal directly with the executor or solicitor if that’s easier for you. Offaly is closer to us than people expect: Edenderry is 40 minutes from Athy, Tullamore about an hour, Clara and Kilcormac a little more, and Birr, Banagher and the Shannon villages about an hour and a quarter. We’re in Offaly most weeks, so there’s usually a slot within a few days.

Full bereavement house clearance in Offaly

The whole house, when the family is ready. We walk through with you first — in person or on a video call — and you tell us what’s being kept, what’s going to family, and what you’d like a charity to have. We clear in an order that makes sense: the rooms you’re finished with first, the ones you want to go through last. Personal effects are collected in one place as we go: documents, photographs, letters, medals, jewellery, anything with a name on it. Good furniture and household goods go for reuse where we can arrange it. The house is left empty and swept, and we send photographs of every room.

If probate requires an inventory or a letter confirming the clearance, we provide it. If the house has been empty a while, we deal with what that brings.

Partial bereavement clearance in Offaly

Many families do this in stages: the bulky furniture now so the house can be shown; the attic and the shed next; the personal rooms when they’re ready. We’re glad to work that way. We’ll clear what you ask and leave everything else exactly as it is, and come back when you call. There’s no pressure to do it all at once and no penalty for doing it in three visits.

What we take — and what we don’t

  • Furniture, beds, mattresses and the contents of every room
  • Personal effects — gathered, boxed and kept for the family
  • Clothes and textiles — sorted for charity where possible
  • Kitchen contents, appliances and white goods
  • Medical equipment, mobility aids, hospital beds (we can arrange return where they’re on loan)
  • Attic, garage, shed and garden
  • Paperwork — set aside unread for the executor
  • Cleaning to broom-clean standard, with a full clean available

Not included: Valuing or selling contents (we can suggest auctioneers); Legal advice on probate or tenancy — ask your solicitor; Hazardous waste.

Bereavement Clearance across Co. Offaly: every town we cover

We provide a bereavement clearance in all 37 towns and villages below, and at the rural addresses between them. Offaly runs from the Kildare border at Edenderry across the bog country to the Shannon at Banagher and Shannonbridge, with Tullamore in the middle, Birr in the south-west and Clara, Ferbane and Kilcormac between. Offaly County Council has no bulky-waste collection but it does run three civic amenity sites — Derryclure outside Tullamore, Birr and Edenderry — all with a €3 car entry: Derryclure weighs furniture at 19c a kilo, while Birr and Edenderry charge per couch, armchair and bag, and Edenderry takes no garden waste, timber or rubble at all.

Tullamore has Georgian and Victorian terraces around the canal, 1960s–80s estates and big 2000s developments; Edenderry grew fast as a commuter town; Birr is a Georgian heritage town with tight streets; and the rest of the county is farmhouses, bungalows and villages with plenty of sheds. The old bog-village cottages often come with decades of accumulation.

Doing it yourself in Offaly: what the council offers

Before you ring anyone, here is the honest picture of what Offaly County Council will and won’t do for a bereavement clearance. Furniture and bulky items are accepted at Derryclure Civic Amenity Site & Waste Recycling Facility and Edenderry Recycling Centre, with mattresses charged separately (Mattress €10 single / €18 double). Birr Recycling Centre does not accept furniture or mattresses at all. Watch the vehicle rules: Small vans (€10) and large vans (€20) admitted; single-axle trailer €10, double-axle €20; domestic waste only.

Offaly County Council — no bulky-waste collection. Offaly County Council does not run a household or bulky-waste kerbside collection. Bin collection is by private permitted collectors, and bulky items (furniture, mattresses, carpets) go to one of the three council civic amenity sites at Tullamore (Derryclure), Birr and Edenderry, all operated for the council by Oxigen Environmental, or are taken away by an authorised private collector. The council runs periodic free Mattress Amnesty days with Cirtex and Oxigen: in September 2025 one Saturday (10am to 2pm) at each of Birr, Edenderry and Derryclure, limit four mattresses per household, householders only, no commercial users.

Council details are taken from the councils’ own published information and checked periodically; hours and charges change, so confirm with the site before travelling. Where a council hasn’t published a charge we say so rather than guess.

Or we come to you

Set that against a collection from us: no van to borrow, no gate fee, no weighbridge surprise, no two-mattress limit, no carrying it down the stairs yourself, and no question about whether the site will turn your load away. We quote a fixed price from photos, we load it, and it leaves under our waste collection permit (NWCPO-25-13287-01). For a single item the council site can be cheaper if you already have the van and the time; for anything more than a car-boot load, we usually are.

How a bereavement clearance works with us

  1. A conversation first. By phone or in person. We listen to what’s needed, who needs to be involved, and what the timing is.
  2. Walk-through and a plan. What’s kept, what’s going where, what order the rooms go in. Written down so everyone in the family has it.
  3. The clearance. Quiet, careful, at your pace. Personal items gathered. Reuse arranged where possible.
  4. Handover. Photos of every room, keys returned as agreed, a clearance letter for probate if needed.

  • Volume — a lifetime’s belongings is usually more than one load

  • Reuse and charity — good furniture reduces the disposal cost and we pass it on
  • Staged visits — several small visits cost a little more than one, but we keep it fair

Bereavement Clearance in Offaly: frequently asked questions

How soon after the funeral should we do this?

Only when you’re ready. There’s no right time. If there’s a deadline from a landlord, a sale or a solicitor we’ll work to it; if there isn’t, take the time you need and call us when you’re ready.

Will the crew be respectful?

Yes. They’re briefed before every bereavement job, they work quietly, and nothing is commented on. Many customers tell us afterwards that it was easier than they feared because of how the crew behaved.

What if we find something we want to keep after you’ve left?

Ring us immediately. Loads are held for a short period before sorting, and we’ll do everything we can to find it. We also gather anything that looks personal as we go, so paperwork, photos and jewellery are usually already set aside.

Can you deal with the solicitor or executor?

Yes. Give us their details and we’ll arrange access, timing and any letter or inventory they need for probate directly with them.

Can the furniture go to charity?

We try. Good furniture is set aside for reuse where we can arrange it; worn or damaged pieces are recycled. Tell us if there’s a particular charity you’d like us to try.

Can you return the hospital bed and mobility equipment?

Where it’s on loan from the HSE or a supplier, yes — tell us and we’ll arrange the return rather than disposing of it.

Do you cover all of Offaly?

Yes — every town and village on this page and the rural addresses between them.

Can one family member deal with you on behalf of everyone?

Yes — that’s how it usually works. We take instructions from one person, keep everything in writing, and anything another family member wants to see is set aside until they’ve had a look.

Can you clear a nursing-home room or a sheltered-housing flat?

Yes. These often need doing quickly and quietly, and the staff will usually have a short window. We work to it.

What do you do with medication and medical supplies?

Medication is set aside for return to a pharmacy — we don’t dispose of it. Mobility equipment on loan is returned where we can arrange it.

Will you find things hidden in the house?

We look. Money, documents and jewellery turn up in coat pockets, biscuit tins and under mattresses, and every bag is checked before it goes on the truck.

Do you provide anything for the solicitor?

A letter confirming the clearance and, where needed, a basic inventory. Tell us what the solicitor has asked for and we’ll provide it.

Does Offaly County Council collect bulky items?

No. Offaly County Council does not run a bulky-waste collection. Your options are the council recycling centres listed above — with their charges and limits — or a permitted private collector like us.

How far is Offaly from your base?

Offaly is closer to us than people expect: Edenderry is 40 minutes from Athy, Tullamore about an hour, Clara and Kilcormac a little more, and Birr, Banagher and the Shannon villages about an hour and a quarter. We’re in Offaly most weeks, so there’s usually a slot within a few days.
