Overgrown garden with green waste before a garden waste clearance in Louth

Garden waste is awkward because it comes in two kinds and the council treats them differently. Green waste — grass, hedge cuttings, branches, leaves, old plants — is cheap to dispose of if it’s clean and separate, and Louth County Council accepts it at the recycling centres for a small charge. Everything else that comes out of a garden — decking, fence panels, the shed, the rotary line, the broken furniture, the paving slabs, the bags of rubble from the patio — is general or construction waste and costs more, and much of it the council sites either refuse or charge heavily for.

We take both kinds in one visit, keep them separate on the truck so the green waste is composted and the rest is disposed of correctly, and we do the cutting back if the garden needs it first. ManageWaste.ie is operated by Krystal Klean Express Limited, permit NWCPO-25-13287-01. Louth is the furthest county we cover — Drogheda is about an hour and a half from Athy, Ardee and Dunleer a little more, and Dundalk and the Cooley peninsula around two hours. We run Louth jobs in batches, usually one or two days a fortnight, so we can keep the price fair; the trade-off is that we’ll offer you a date rather than a same-week slot.

Full garden clearance in Louth

An overgrown or abandoned garden brought back to bare ground: the growth cut back and removed, the old shed dismantled, the decking and fencing lifted, the junk that accumulated behind the shed taken, the paving and rubble bagged and loaded. We bring the tools for the cutting back and the crew for the carrying — in Louth it usually means a long carry from the back of a site to the road. Green waste goes as one stream, timber as another, general and rubble as a third. A small overgrown town garden is a half-day; a large rural garden with a collapsed shed and years of dumping is a day or two.

Green waste only, or just the big stuff

If you’ve done the cutting and just need the pile gone, we collect bagged or loose green waste as a single cheap stream — far cheaper than mixed waste, and it goes for composting. Or the reverse: just the decking, just the shed, just the fence panels, with the garden itself left alone. Both are priced for what they are.

What we take — and what we don’t

  • Grass, hedge cuttings, branches, leaves and old plants
  • Tree limbs and trunks that can be loaded by hand
  • Decking, fence panels, posts and sleepers
  • Sheds — dismantled and removed
  • Garden furniture, barbecues, pots and planters
  • Paving slabs, bagged soil and small amounts of rubble
  • Garden junk — rotary lines, broken tools, dumped rubbish
  • Cutting back and strimming before clearance, where needed

Not included: Tree felling and stump grinding (we can recommend a tree surgeon); Large volumes of soil or rubble (ask — a grab lorry may be cheaper); Japanese knotweed and invasive species (specialist disposal required — we’ll tell you if we see it).

Garden Waste Clearance across Co. Louth: every town we cover

We provide a garden waste clearance in all 29 towns and villages below, and at the rural addresses between them. Louth is Ireland’s smallest county but it has two of its biggest towns: Drogheda in the south, straddling the Boyne, and Dundalk in the north under the Cooley mountains, with Ardee, Dunleer and the Castlebellingham villages between them and a run of coastal villages from Baltray up to Carlingford and Omeath. Louth County Council does not collect bulky waste. Its two civic amenity centres at Dundalk and Drogheda (both run by V&W Recycling) charge a €4 entry plus item charges that aren’t published online, and the annual mattress-and-couch amnesty in early September is the only free route for furniture.

Drogheda and Dundalk both have Victorian town-centre terraces, 1950s–70s council-built estates and large 2000s developments on the edges, plus apartment schemes near the stations and the quays. Ardee, Dunleer and the villages are smaller-scale, with farmhouses and bungalows on their own sites across mid-Louth and the Cooley peninsula. Town-centre parking in Drogheda and Dundalk is the main access issue.

Doing it yourself in Louth: what the council offers

Before you ring anyone, here is the honest picture of what Louth County Council will and won’t do for a garden waste clearance. Clean green waste goes to Dundalk Recycling Centre (V&W Civic Amenity Centre) and Drogheda Recycling Centre (V&W Civic Amenity Centre), charged per bag or by weight. Dundalk Recycling Centre (V&W Civic Amenity Centre) and Drogheda Recycling Centre (V&W Civic Amenity Centre) won’t take construction waste. Watch the vehicle rules: Cars and car trailers admitted (trailer charge applies for green waste); no commercial vehicles or commercial waste. Van policy not published - ring ahead.

Louth County Council — no bulky-waste collection. Louth County Council does not collect household waste or bulky items and has no bookable bulky-waste service. It directs residents to the two civic amenity centres in Dundalk and Drogheda, both run by V&W Recycling, where beds, couches, carpet/lino, children's toys and bags of non-recyclable domestic waste are accepted for a charge (ring 042 9329200 or 041 9803900 for the price list - V&W do not publish bulky prices online), or to the nine authorised bulky-waste / skip operators the council lists (e.g. Pronto Waste Clearance & Recycling 087 2912911, Skips on Wheels 083 1552410). Once a year, under the Anti-Dumping Initiative, the council runs a free Mattress & Couch Amnesty, normally over two days in early September: in 2025 it was Wed 3 September 9:30am–5:30pm at the V&W centres in Dundalk and Drogheda and Thu 4 September 9:30am–3:30pm at Kieran & McGee Livestock Sales Yard, Ardee (A92 VP92); in 2024 it was 11–12 September at the same three locations. Only mattresses, sofas and armchairs are taken, maximum 3 items per vehicle, the council covers the disposal cost but the normal €4 entry charge still applies at Dundalk and Drogheda (Ardee is free). The 2025 event took in 2,233 mattresses and 2,124 couches. Dates are announced on louthcoco.ie and in the Dundalk Democrat / Drogheda Independent in August.

Council details are taken from the councils’ own published information and checked periodically; hours and charges change, so confirm with the site before travelling. Where a council hasn’t published a charge we say so rather than guess.

Or we come to you

Set that against a collection from us: no van to borrow, no gate fee, no weighbridge surprise, no two-mattress limit, no carrying it down the stairs yourself, and no question about whether the site will turn your load away. We quote a fixed price from photos, we load it, and it leaves under our waste collection permit (NWCPO-25-13287-01). For a single item the council site can be cheaper if you already have the van and the time; for anything more than a car-boot load, we usually are.

Garden Waste Clearance in Louth — our crew loading the truck on a recent job

What affects the price in Louth

  • Green versus general — green waste alone is the cheapest thing we collect
  • Volume — trailer loads of cuttings add up
  • Weight — soil, rubble, slabs and wet timber
  • Cutting back — time with the tools before loading
  • Carry distance — through a house, up a passage, or across a site

Louth is the furthest county we cover — Drogheda is about an hour and a half from Athy, Ardee and Dunleer a little more, and Dundalk and the Cooley peninsula around two hours. We run Louth jobs in batches, usually one or two days a fortnight, so we can keep the price fair; the trade-off is that we’ll offer you a date rather than a same-week slot. Garden Waste Clearance in Louth: frequently asked questions

Is green waste cheaper than other garden waste?

Much. Clean green waste goes for composting at a low rate. Mixed garden waste — decking, soil, rubble, plastics — costs several times more. Keep them separate if you’re bagging it yourself and we’ll price it that way.

Will you do the cutting back?

Yes — strimming, hedge cutting and clearing growth before loading is part of a full garden clearance. Tree felling is a tree surgeon’s job.

Do you take the shed too?

Yes, dismantled and loaded with the rest. See the shed clearance page for Louth if the shed is the main job.

Can you take soil and paving?

Small amounts, bagged, yes. For a patio-worth or a skip of soil, a grab lorry is usually cheaper and we’ll say so.

Does everything have to go through the house?

Rarely in Louth — most gardens have side access or a gate. Where it does, we protect the route and sweep afterwards.

When is the best time to book?

Spring and autumn are busiest; mid-summer and winter are quieter and easier to book. For an overgrown garden, late winter before growth starts is ideal.

Do you take soil and turf?

Small amounts, yes. A patio-worth or a trailer of topsoil is heavy and a grab lorry is usually cheaper — we’ll tell you.

Can you remove a greenhouse or a polytunnel?

Yes — glass greenhouses are dismantled carefully and the glass taken as flat glass; polytunnel frames and covers are loaded separately.

What about a pond or a rockery?

Pond liners, pumps and the rubble from a rockery, yes. Draining a pond and rehoming fish is yours to do first.

Do you take hedge cuttings with brambles and thorns?

Yes — gloves and patience. Thorny waste still composts; we just load it carefully.

When are you busiest for gardens in Louth?

April to June and September to October. Book a week or two ahead in those months; the rest of the year a few days is usually enough.

Does Louth County Council collect bulky items?

No. Louth County Council does not run a bulky-waste collection. Your options are the council recycling centres listed above — with their charges and limits — or a permitted private collector like us.

How far is Louth from your base?

Louth is the furthest county we cover — Drogheda is about an hour and a half from Athy, Ardee and Dunleer a little more, and Dundalk and the Cooley peninsula around two hours. We run Louth jobs in batches, usually one or two days a fortnight, so we can keep the price fair; the trade-off is that we’ll offer you a date rather than a same-week slot.
